CHES SPECIAL RISK INC. is looking for a skilled commercial property underwriter looking to expand their horizons and to take the challenge of becoming a Branch Manager and to complement its small, dynamic, growing team. We are seeking a team oriented individual with positive attitude, strong relationship building skills and a sales focus to contribute to our growing book of business. The successful candidate will have the ability to effectively evaluate and underwrite large and complex commercial property risks; a predilection towards precise, detailed tasks, while responding well to pressure situations and deadlines. An individual who has a fine balance between analytical and sociable character is required, and one that feels confident in effectively managing and growing our Team and presence in the Atlantic Region.

Role Purpose (Summary)


To grow and underwrite commercial property business in accordance with CHES SPECIAL RISK INC. business plan  


General Description


  • Underwrite new and existing property business by analyzing clients’ business operation, current coverage and previous claims experience to determine exposure and set appropriate terms and premiums
  • Comply with all legal and regulatory requirements to ensure obligations are met
  • Contribute to recording and measuring of insurance risks to ensure accuracy and good practise
  • Strong customer service focus with an emphasis on resolving broker requests and concers in a timely fashion
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders including customers, brokers, business partners and colleagues
  • Utilise knowledge of market dynamics and market cycles to operate effectively and appropriatly
  • Meet business objectives, including:
  1. negotiating rates, terms and conditions for existing and new business and renewals
  2. managing production and issue contract certainty documentation within set timeframe.
  3. ensuring compliance with internal and external regulations and guidelines
  4. ensuring contribution to the business plan and objectives
  • Participate in the review and analysis of  the portfolio to identify progress toward   business objectives
  • Contribute to the aggregate management and peer review processes to encourage and develop excellence.


Essential Requirements


  • Minimum 5 years experience writing commercial property insurance; casualty and professional liability experience an asset.
  • Previous Management Position an Advantage
  • High level of technical competancy in evaluating and writing large, complex accounts
  • Knowledge of commercial property forms, pricing and rating methodology, modeling and valuation tools
  • Ability to review and understand standard property and casualty policy wordings
  • Ability to analyse data and use for risk profiling and decision-making
  • A high level of numeracy and literacy
  • Market awareness and broker development acumen
  • Thorough knowledge of legal and regulatory requirements
  • Motivated, enthusiastic, dynamic and flexible – willing to work in CHES SPECIAL RISK INC. style/open concept environment
  • Strong analytical, organisational and prioritisation skills
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, influencing and negotiating skills
  • Post secondary education & CIP/FCIP qualified preferred
  • Advanced level understanding of relevant software, including Excel and other departmental software packages.
